The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. February 21, 2012

Maria Alyokhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova were members of the punk band and Russian collective -- Pussy Riot. The performance and video that gave them global fame happened at Moscow's Cathedral of Christ the Savior, on February 21, 2012. Maria and Nadezhda were released from prison recently, an attempt they said for Putin to repair his reputation before the Sochi Olympics. Then, they were kicked out of the Pussy Riot collective. This I suspect happened because they wore make-up on American television, but that is not the reason given. This is not really 'selling out' though. The amazing thing is that this collective activity happened at all. This is not the way women have in the past contributed to the over-all good. Their bravery and creativity is wonderful and surprising. To all former and present Pussy-Riot members, I say, "my bra's off to you."
