Florence Nightingale was quoted by Evelyn Underhill in her book Practical Mysticism
, 1914. Nightingale (May 12, 1820 to August 13, 1910) a pioneer in hospital sanitation, is a Victorian example of self sacrifice and valor. We quote Underhill, quoting Nightingale:
To this same apprehension of Reality, this linking up of each finite expression with its Origin, this search for the inner significance of every fragment of life, one of the greatest and most balanced contemplatives of the nineteenth century, Florence Nightingale, reached out when she exclaimed in an hour of self-examination, ' I must strive to see only God in my friends, and God in my cats.'
Underhill is noted for her books on mysticism, but she ranks as a cat-lover also. One assumes she felt Florence Nightingale a kindred spirit.
