The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

June 13, 1645

1584 is commonly given as the birth year of Miyamoto Musashi and the date of his death as June 13, 1645.
He is the author of The Book of Five Rings , which is, ostensibly anyway, a book on military strategy. Each ring is actually a chapter in this presentation of Samurai action. Musashi stresses that he had no teacher and learned these lessons uninfluenced by ideas such as those of the religions. The first ring is earth, then water, then fire, then wind, then, the void. These are sections of The Book of Five Rings. It includes precepts like to maintain an advantage of ground higher than that of your opponent.

The last section, the fifth ring, is "The Book of the Void," and is concerned more directly with thought-- he says, By knowing things that exist, you can know that which does not exist."

He begins the book using words such as "I will express the heart of truth...Taking up my brush at one revolution past the Hour of the Tiger on the night of the tenth day of the tenth month, I begin this book."

The translation I glanced at said "one revolution past the Hour of the Tiger" was 4:30 am.
