Karel Appel, a Dutch avant garde artist, was born in Amsterdam on April 25, 1921 and died in Zurich on May 3, 2006. He was buried in Paris's Pere Lachaise cemetery. These places suggest the breadth of his career. A world wide renown was late in coming. During the war he managed to avoid being conscripted by the occupiers into the German workforce.

Appel's art includes poetry, sculpture and painting. An example of this last, an oil painting dating to 1953, and titled "Cat" may be seen at Google images.
