July 25, 1844

Thomas Eakins, one of America's greatest painters, was born on July 25, 1844. His 1874 portrait of "Professor Benjamin Howard Rand," features a cat on the chemistry professor's desk. Rand is portrayed as holding a book open with one hand, and stroking the dark cat with his other hand.
