The Book, Cat, & Cat Book Lovers Almanac

of historical trivia regarding books, cats, and other animals. Actually this blog has evolved so that it is described better as a blog about cats in history and culture. And we take as a theme the advice of Aldous Huxley: If you want to be a writer, get some cats. Don't forget to see the archived articles linked at the bottom of the page.

February 15, 1948

Art Spiegelman was born February 15, 1948, in Stockholm in the chaos of post war Europe. In 1977 he married fellow artist Francoise Mouly and they have two children. We are not citing Maus: A Survivor's Tale (1991) as an almanac item, though I can't resist a Spiegelman quote I got from something Simon Schama wrote. Schama, Mouly and Spiegelman are all connected with New Yorker magazine. Anyway the story is related that a interviewer asked Art if it was not bad taste to write a comic book about Auschwitz and Art Spiegelman replied, no, what's in bad taste is Auschwitz.

In an earlier career Spiegelman gained fame as a cartoonist for Topps and the originator of the Wacky Packages series of collectible cards.
And we have one of these copied here:
